Today we met with Stiftung Burg Tannroda for our final HERITAGE RE:START partner meeting before the project closes on 31 August. One question has followed us from Thuringia to Occitanie. When people say a building belongs to the community, who holds the keys and who decides what happens inside?
At Burg Tannroda, we learned how one person took responsibility for restoring part of a castle. In Luchon, the municipality provides a former school and the youth association decides with local young people how to use it. Talking to the people involved helped us understand what a photograph of either building would have missed.
When we began writing the toolkit together, each team chose examples from its region and explained what readers in the other country would need to know. Our German partners shared the findings with adult learners in July. Now an educator, a local association or a group of neighbours can use those cases to start a conversation about a building of their own.
Thank you to everyone who opened a door, explained how they paid for a site or made time to tell us about a difficult decision. Read their stories in the HERITAGE RE:START toolkit.
